Ram junior Carter Morton finished third in the state in the Class 2A boys high jump. Morton cleared the bar on his third attempt at 6’ 4”, and then missed all three attempts at 6’ 5”.
Senior Braeden Hoyer of Northeast (Goose Lake) cleared his first attempt at 6’ 5” and his third attempted at 6’ 6”. He missed at 6’ 7”. Senior Grant Brouwer of Sibley-Ocheyedan didn’t miss until he tried 6’11”. He won the title with his jump of 6’ 9”.
In preliminary competition, Morton advanced to the finals of the 110m high hurdles, finishing seventh with a time of 15.55 seconds. The fastest time in the prelims was 14.84 seconds set by senior Avery Martensen of Monticello.
Morton also ran in the 400m hurdles. He finished in ninth place with a time of 57.06 seconds. The winning time was 54.52 seconds set by senior Ethan Albright of Okoboji (Milford).
Sophomore Brooklyn Olson placed 11th in the discus throw at 113’ 8” on her third throw, after fouling on her first two attempts. Senior Madison McDermott of Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center won the discus at 118’ 11”.
In the boys discus, junior Tyler Miller fouled on all three throws.
The boys 4 X 100m relay did not qualify for the finals, finishing 16th in the prelims with a time off 45.104 seconds. On the team was made up entirely of juniors, with Tyler Teeples, Morton, Brent Riley and Colby Kafer. The 8th place qualifying time was Roland-Story’s 44.55 seconds.
The girls 4 X 100m relay placed 21st in prelims with a time of 54.41 seconds. Junior Maddy Sigler, senior Melanie Doran, and sophomores Makala Kafer and Brianna Osterson comprised the team. The fastest time in the prelims was OABCIG’s 50.83 seconds. The last qualifying time was 51.50 seconds.
The same relay team ran the 4 X 200m relay but was disqualified.
Saturday at the co-ed State Track and Field Meet will include the girls sprint medley relay team of juniors Paige Heaning and Sigler, and sophomores Kafer and Osterson in the sprint medley relay at 9 am and Morton in the finals of the 110m high hurdles at 1:15 pm.
